Things to look for in a swing set
- Children younger than 3 years old should be put in a toddler swing seat, which has support on all sides and restraints
- Check to ensure that there are no sharp points or edges on the swing set
- Inspect your swing set often to verify the equipment is in good condition
Positioning your new swing set
- Make sure toddler swing sets are at least 2 feet above ground so kids can't use it on their own
- Use sand or pea gravel, or a rubberized surface under the swing set, as these materials absorb the impact of a fall much better than dirt or grass
- Ensure the swing set is erected at least 6 feet away from any building or fences
- Position the swing set in a shaded area, so that surfaces won't get too hot to the touch
Playtime safety
- Constant adult supervision is needed to make sure children stay safe
- Kids should never stand or kneel in the swing, and should hold tightly with both hands
- Make sure kids stop swinging before getting off the swing
- Only one person should be in one swing at a time, as swings are designed to safely hold just one person
- Kids should be reminded not to push anyone else in the swing or let others push them
- Don't swing empty swings, and never twist swing chains
